Salt substitute from banana plant (Musa- balbisiana Colla)

Image
ABSTRACT: With improvement of global economic affordability high intake of ready-to-eat salty foods has become a part of life and people are increasingly facing health risks including high blood pressure associated with high intake of table salt (NaCl). The United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends that individuals consume not more than 2300 mg of sodium per day against 4700 mg of potassium which is more than twice of sodium. Higher dietary potassium intakes may help in significantly lowering blood pressure. Potassium chloride may flavor our food at the same time lower the limit of sodium intake thus helping to lower blood pressure and other physiological anomalies connected with high sodium intake. To lower sodium intake salt substitutes are one option where some or all of the sodium chloride in table salt have been replaced by potassium chloride. An excellent salt substitute, with potassium to sodium ratio in the same breath as in nature, has been derived f...

Evaluation of anticonvulsant activity of ethanolic extract of Zingiber officinale in Swiss albino rats

Image
ABSTRACT: Epilepsy is a serious neurological disorder associated with recurrent episodes of seizures due to the abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Ginger, the rhizome of Zingiber officinale, is one of the most widely used species of the ginger family Zingiberaceae. Zingiber officinale shows anticonvulsant activity apart from many other medicinal properties such as immuno-modulatory, anti-tumorogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-lipidemic, carminative and anti-emetic actions. Ginger is a strong anti-oxidant agent and may prevent generation of free radicals. Maximal electroshock seizures (MES) in albino rats were used to study anticonvulsant activity of ethanolic extract of Zingiber officinale rhizome. The ethanolic extract of Zingiber officinale rhizome was administered orally in graded doses of 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg in swiss albino rats and the effects were compared with phenytoin as standard and normal saline as control in MES me...

Synthesis, physicochemical and biological evaluation of Co (II) complexes derived from 5-chloro-2-hydroxy acetophenone N(4) methyl thiosemicarbazone

Image
ABSTRACT: Heterocyclic base adducts of cobalt (II) complexes have been synthesized by the reaction of cobalt (II) chloride with 5-chloro-2-hydroxy acetophenone N(4) methyl thiosemicarbazone in presence of heterocyclic base like pyridine (py), 2,2’-bipyridine (bipy), 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen), α/β-picoline. The synthesized thiosemcarbazone has been characterized by 13C, 1H NMR as well as IR, electronic spectra. The magnetic and spectroscopic study show octahedral geometry for six coordinate, square planner geometry for the four coordinate and a distorted square pyramidal for five coordinate complexes. The thiosemicarbazone and its cobalt (II) complexes exhibit growth inhibitory activity against Pseudomonas Putida, Escherichia Coli, Aspergillus Niger and Candida Albicans. Thiosemicarbazone and its cobalt (II) complexes have also been found antioxidant. Studies on adsorption mechanism and kinetics of magnesium in selected cocoa growing soils in Nigeria

Image
ABSTRACT: Several soil evaluations have found magnesium deficient in most cocoa plantations in Nigeria. Authors have recommended the use of magnesium fertilizers to address the deficiency. For appropriate fertilizer application and effective utilization of applied fertilizer, understanding the adsorption kinetics and magnesium holding capacity of each soil will help in making precise recommendation in order to prevent wasting of resources and contamination of the environment with un-adsorbed magnesium. Soil samples were collected with soil auger at a depth of 0-30cm from selected cocoa plantations in Lodu, Itu, Ikom, Asaba and Uhonmora in Abia, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta and Edo States respectively. One gram (1.0 g) of each sample was equilibrated with 30ml of 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 mg Mg L-1 solution. Another portion (1.0 g) of each sample was equilibrated with 30ml of 70 mg Mg L-1 for 40, 80, 120 and 140 minutes to study the kinetics of Mg2+ ions in soil. The data generat...

Removal of methylene blue dye from waste waters using new bio-sorbents derived from Annona squamosa and Azadiracta indica plants

Image
ABSTRACT: Leaves, stems and their ashes of Annona Squamosa, and Azdirachta Indica have been probed for their sorption abilities towards Methylene Blue using simulated waste waters. The physicochemical parameters such as pH, time of equilibration and sorbent concentrations are optimized for the maximum removal of Methylene Blue. These sorbents are found to be effective at pH 8. Sorbent dosage and time needed for the maximum removal of Methylene Blue are found to be less for the ashes than with the raw powders of the plant materials Methodologies have been developed for the extraction of good quantities of Methylene Blue dye from waste water samples. Fivefold excess of common anions ions, have not interfered the extraction while Cation like Ca2+, Mg2 and Cu2+ have shown some interference but Fe2+ and Zn2+ have synergistically maintained the maximum extraction of the dye. The procedures developed are successfully applied for the samples collected from dyeing industries.  F...

Identification, isolation and quantification of unknown impurity in tolterodine tartrate tablets by stability indicating HPLC method

Image
ABSTRACT: A sensitive gradient reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method development for identification and quantification of impurities in pharmaceutical products is a challenging and innovative activity. The present investigation aims to the identification of new unknown impurity of Tolterodine tartrate formed in stability samples of the drug product at a level up to 0.5% by using a stability indicating HPLC method. This impurity molecular weight was identified by LC-MS and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques such as 1H NMR, 13C NMR, LC/MS/MS, elemental analysis and FT-IR. Based on the data obtained from spectroscopic tools, the impurity was named as, 6-methyl-4-phenylchroman-2-ol. The structure of this impurity was also established unambiguously, prepared by isolation and co-injected into HPLC to confirm the retention time. To the best of our knowledge, this impurity has not been reported elsewhere. Structural elucidation of the impurity by ...

Ultrasonic studies of molecular interaction of octanol and decanol with nonpolar solvents

Image
ABSTRACT: Ultrasound speed (u), density (ρ) and viscosity (η) have been measured for pure liquids and their binary mixtures formed from 1-octanol, and 1-decanol with non-polar solvents like toluene, carbon tetrachloride, benzene and dioxane at 301 K covering the entire mole fraction range of n-alcohols. From the experimental data, adiabatic compressibility ( β ) ,intermolecular free length (Lf), acoustic impedance (Z), have been computed. These parameters are used to discuss the nature and extent of intermolecular interactions between the component molecules. The experimental values have been correlated using Nomotos, Ideal mixture, Jungies, Impedence and Rao’s relations.
